I'm reading every Aquaman solo adventure in publication order, one per day. After I read each story I'm going to post the cover/splash page and a few thoughts on the story.
Adventure #117 (June 1947) - The Flying Dutchman!
When the Flying Dutchman starts robbing ships, Aquaman goes ghost hunting.
At the beginning of the story, Aquaman is chatting with an old friend, Cap'n Dan Billows, who currently captains the luxury yacht Fantasy. Billows is a bit worried about shipping out with the current attacks by the Flying Dutchman, but his boss Rex Collier doesn't believe in Aquaman, much less a ghost ship. Of course, they get attacked by the Flying Dutchman. But this time, instead of robbing the cargo, the ghost ship kidnaps Collier.
Aquaman puts it all together pretty much the instant he hears that Collier has been kidnapped, and is able to hunt down the specially outfitted submarine that is pretending to be the Flying Dutchman. And he finds Collier just where he expects him to be.
Finny Friends Report: Porpoises report that something has happened to Billows' ship, so Aquaman goes to investigate. He uses gulls as scouts. He has the porpoises help him tangle the submarine in seaweed. The gulls act as bombers and drop the gas pellets on the bad guys.
Captured/Knocked Out report: Not in this story.
Quotefile: Aquaman, swinging with a rope to attack the bad guy, "I'm not a Dutchman - but I can fly when I have to!"
Have you read this story? What do you think?
