New Amazing Aquaman Figure

At $430, this will not make it into my collection, but I'd love to have it. Sideshow Collectibles is adding a deluxe Aquaman figure to its Justice League collection, complete with interchangeable head and hand, so you can have the classic look or the Peter David look.

The Classic Aquaman is quite intense.

You can convert the statue to the Grim 'n' Gritty Aquaman, as well.

Pre-orders on the figure begin today, so head on over and take a look.

Aquaman Swimsuit

I'm not much for thin strap suits, or I might be tempted by this "Fishchick" Women's Swimsuit.

Getting The Happy Meal Toy You Want Without Buying A Happy Meal

If you are like me, you cannot stomach McDonalds food product any more. I could handle it as a kid, but nowadays I rarely eat it, and never feel very good about it when I do. So when I heard they were doing a Young Justice Happy Meal promotion, I thought, "Great, I'm gonna have to eat mung again." However, I held out one shred of hope. In the past, I've managed to get the Wizard of Oz Happy Meal toys without too much effort. In fact, the last time they had them, hubby-Eric and I were able to get all the toys in one visit. Now I'm going to explain how we did it, so you can do it too if you want.

Manta and Kaldur

1) Do your research. Make sure the toys you want are in the current rotation. Check happymeal.com for the latest information. But don't rely on them, instead, go to step two if you think they are in and...

2) Call the store(s) you plan to visit and ask them if they have the line you are looking for. If you are looking for an individual figure, like I was, you still want to ask about the entire line. For instance, I called my store and asked if they had the superhero Happy Meal toys, then when she didn't understand, I asked about the Young Justice toys, and she confirmed they were in.

3) Make sure you go early in the promotion. Don't wait until the last week. If at all possible, go the first week the toys are out.

4) Go during a less busy time. The times vary depending on the store, but you are going to be taking up someone's valuable working time, so try to make sure you hit the store when it's not too busy.

5) Find or ask for a manager. The counter workers will usually not be able to help you with this request.

6) Ask specifically for the "Customer Satisfaction Box" for the line of toys you are looking for. There will be a box for each line, and most restaurants receive them sometime early in the promotion. Be polite, and if they have no idea what you are talking about, try to find another manager. You can also do this in step two, but you're going to have to ask in the store as well.
A Customer Satisfaction Box is a box that simply contains complete sets of all the toys in a Happy Meal promotion. It usually has anywhere between two to six complete sets along with extras of the most popular toys. It is meant to be used to satisfy customer requests, but not all stores use it that way. The reason you need to go early in the promotion is because each store only gets ONE box per line of toys, and if someone gets there before you, they may all be gone.
7) This is important: some stores will let you go through the box yourself, others will not even let you see it. Make sure you tell them clearly which figures you want. For instance, the Aqualad and Black Manta figures in the Young Justice set were figures 5 and 6, and both had the name on the wrapper, but it was hard to see. I also pointed them out on the display case to the assistant manager helping me.

8) Pay for your toys, and if they ask you to buy a meal, do so. Most stores will not require you to buy a meal to get the toys.

9) Be sure to thank everyone who helped you. This is also important. Don't be a snotty customer, give sincere thanks to the workers who just helped you out. Their duties do not require them to get that box for you, so you best be grateful if they do.

10) Go home and eat something healthy. This is an optional step.

Ok, now I've told you what I did, and yes, I managed to get both Aqualad and Black Manta very easily and almost utterly painlessly. I got in a couple of people's way (sorry fellow customers!) and the poor fellow the assistant manager sent back to find the box had to search a little (it took him a few minutes), but for the most part it was no big deal.

Manta and Kaldur in Bag

If I'd been thinking, I would have gotten two of each, but I barely had the cash to get one of each anyway. And I would LOVE to dissect these toys, as they are the first Happy Meal toys I've ever gotten that have an on/off switch because they light up. And while Aqualad's light-up arm tattoo is cool, Black Manta looks truly awe-inspiring with his light up eyes.

Entourage Aquaman Movie Poster

Dave Will Design is at it again, and has made another very limited print edition of the Aquaman movie poster as seen in the TV series Entourage. If you missed the first one, or want a matching set, time to check it out.

Happy Aquasitions!

I've been telling you to keep an eye on HappyMeal.com for the Batman: Brave and the Bold toys. Well, I finally got 'em for myself. Hubby and I went down to our local McDonald's and asked if I could just get the Manta Ship and Aquaman toy. The manager nicely found one of each for me, and we were done. Couldn't have been any easier.

Toys wrapped

As I really can't eat any McDonald's foodstuff anymore, I just got the toys. Hence the receipt saying "2 HAPPY TOY NO FOOD". I would have liked to get a second set of the two toys to keep in package, but we can't really swing it right now. So after photographing the two for this post, I unwrapped them and played around a little. Then posed them for another photo.

Toys unwrapped

As you can see, the toys are number 3 (Aquaman) and number 6 (Black Manta Sub Launcher). The Mantaship is not to scale with Aquaman, but is still really cool. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it is recalled due to the danger of the launching spear. It flies a nice distance! The Aquaman figure has a switch in back: you hold the switch down, put the water ball on his hands, then let go and he throws it. Not nearly as satisfying as the sub launcher, but if you say, "OUTRAGEOUS!" as you have him throw, it helps a little.

I kind of wish I got a full Happy Meal so I could get the box as well... but that's for another attempt I guess.

Aquasitions! part III

The last of my August Aquasitions has a little bit of a story behind it. See, I went to this Wizard of Oz convention with my husband this summer. One of the events was a contest for decorating green glasses. I won a prize unexpectedly, and the prize was a $15 gift certificate to Toys'R'Us. I used that prize to purchase my next Aquasition online.

I originally intended to get an Aquaman action figure. But then I spotted Batman: The Brave and The Bold Wall Stickers and realized I just had to get them.

Full Sticker Sheet

The full set contains some very cool Batman images from Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Like Colorforms, these are vinyl cut-outs that stick to smooth surfaces, including most walls, doors, and some foreheads.

Plastic Man

Who better than Plastic Man to protect the doorknob?

Blue Beetle

Blue Beetle protects the closet from marauding ... um, closet monsters?

Batman

Batman protects the router from viruses and other nasties.

Of course, there are five stickers in the set that are Aquaman related. There's these four awesome stickers, shown here protecting my bedside:

Aquaman

Aquaman gets his own sticker, and Black Manta is one of only two villains in the set. There's also a circle sticker of Aquaman and an Aquaman logo. The other Aquaman appearance in the set is a tad more subtle.

Batman with Background

He's also on this Batman sticker, along with Green Arrow and Plastic Man. I decided to have this one guard another door in the house.

The best fun is that these can be pulled off and moved around, allowing me to constantly redecorate the house (much to my husband's annoyance). I really feel like I got my money's worth out of this, especially since I only really had to pay shipping costs.

Aquasitions! part II

This next Aquasition was a complete surprise to me. I got a strange note from a friend and Aquaman artist, and then a few days later this arrived in the mail. An Oz friend by the name of Freddy had been wandering garage sales while staying with the Aquaman artist, found this item, and thought of me!

It's a DC Comics lunchbox, classic Super Friends era!

Lunchbox Front

The front has our standard trio with a tagalong. Superman! Wonder Woman! Batman! Oh, yeah, and Robin. Each one nicely labeled in case you don't know them by sight. And I LOVE the purple trim!

Lunchbox Back

And here's the back of the lunchbox! We get Flash, Batgirl, and Green Arrow. Very cool! But... where's Aquaman?

Lunchbox Side 1

Here's a side of the lunchbox. The Riddler, Catwoman, and the Joker. Still no Aquaman.

Lunchbox Side 2

Here's the other side. Supergirl... and hey, wait a minute! Batman and Robin again? Why not give somebody else a chance, you super-attention hogs!

Lunchbox top

Well, here's the top of the lunchbox, looking under the nifty purple handle. Here we get "Kitten" and the Penguin. I thought her name was Cheetah? Still no Aquaman... But wait, there's one more side to look at:

Lunchbox bottom

Ah! There he is! On the bottom with the good company of Hawkman and Green Lantern. It's Aquaman's standard diving pose, but it means he's bigger and front and center from the other two.

I'm really pleased to add this to my collection. I vaguely recall only one lunchbox I had as a kid, and it wasn't a superhero one. But I like to think that little me would have wanted this box and would have delighted in having it. Now, I wonder if there's any chance at all of finding the thermos that went with it? Hrm. I think I'm only interested if that thermos has Aquaman on it...

Aquasitions! part I

It's been a big month for me getting Aquaman stuff, both by purchasing it and other means. So I thought I'd do a multi-part post that shows off some of the stuff I've gotten recently that's Aquaman related. This is Aquasitions!

Aquasitions Overview

First up is the Entourage Aquaman Poster. I told you about the fan who made this poster based on the Variety ad in the show itself. He limited the run of posters to 25 copies, and only made it so that he could have one for himself. In gratitude for me mentioning the poster, he sent one to me. I got lucky 13 of 25.

Entourage Poster

I have to admit, it's a really nice little poster, the exact thing I wish HBO had made for the series. I don't think they realized that merchandising the fake Aquaman movie would have worked so well. The demand was, and is, there for posters and T-shirts. Back to the poster, it really needs to be properly framed.

Next up is the Commissioned Artwork that Tom Beland produced of Aquaman and Mera.

Tom Beland Art

All the way from Puerto Rico, this artwork is great to have in my collection. Like the poster, it needs to be properly framed. I have a great desire to get my artwork up on my walls again, and just haven't done it.

The third object of interest for this post is my Starro Aquaman Heroclix.

Starro Clix

I'm sorry about the fuzzy image. My phone doesn't take good close-up pictures, I'm afraid. This one came about because I noticed it on eBay going for cheaper than I'd seen it at any convention. I wanted it, and I indulged just a little and got it. I'm still missing a few Aquaman-related HeroClix, including the Crisis Aqualad, Garth, and Tempest, the Arkham Asylum Black Manta, and the two pogs. But I'll get 'em eventually. I hope.

Moving on, let's hit one more from the bit picture before I go. This is the San Diego Comic Con convention bag.

Convention Bag with books

I asked if someone going to San Diego happened to run across one of these, if they might get it for me. The wonderful David Oakes found one while wandering (apparently a little girl didn't want to lug it around any more) and sent it to me after the con, with jokes about how the little girl might still be in it because it weighed so much!

Inside were the program guide for the convention and the souvenir book. The bag itself is HUGE, as you might be able to tell from this picture:

Convention Bag

It's apparently designed to hang on your chest so you can just drop all the stuff you are buying and picking up into it. There's even a side pocket that appears to be designed to hold posters.

So that's it for this edition of Aquasitions. Watch this space. In a day or so, I'll reveal something else.

The Aquaman Shrine has news on the Aquaman Hoodie. In short, if enough people pre-order, it will be made.

Friday Aqua-Links

I wish I could get this! I probably wouldn't use it either, but it looks great.

Can you identify the fish? It's pretty scary looking.

I feel sorry for these fish. Strange how people get pets, then mistreat them. Why get pets if you can't take care of them?

Pirates of Somalia seize a yacht, capturing 30 crew members and apparently holding them hostage. Of interest: "The International Maritime Bureau, which tracks piracy, said in its annual report earlier this year that global pirate attacks rose 10 percent in 2007, marking the first increase in three years."

The humbolt squid. More on the show about the squid. Watch it here.

Aqualinks

Aquaman on The Big Bang Theory. That's a show, not his opinion on the universe (sadly).

The Comic Treadmill takes on Adventure Comics 460-463 and Adventure Comics 464-466 (not the high points of Aquaman's career).

Why doesn't DC make cool things like this ruler anymore?

Attack of the killer Jellyfish.

Rogue Waves and Saving Sailors.

Unusual Aquaman Item on eBay

Aquaman Pepsi Cap

I've never seen this particular Aquaman item... although the image of Aquaman used is pretty common. According to the description on eBay, this was made in Argentina in the 1970s. As much as I'd like to have this in my collection, I can't really afford $15 for a bottlecap.

Check out the seller's other items, there are more superhero bottlecaps and some other hero figures (including an Aquaman one).

Inheritance

Inheritance
I suppose I should report on this prose novel by Devin Grayson, as in includes Aquaman. The novel, Inheritance, has gathered some criticism for its rather blatant subtext. It's supposed to be about the relationship of superheroes to their sidekicks... um. Well... read for yourself (profanity warning). And there is more here.

Galley Cat asked what was up.
So I shot off an email to Grayson and asked her how this all happened. She reminded me that as one of the comic book industry's few openly bisexual women creators, she's enjoyed working queer material into her stories throughout her career. "That said, I am also a contract worker when at DC crafting stories with licensed characters," she explained, "and my job at that time is to stick pretty close to previously established interpretations and guidelines, which is a necessary and satisfying aspect of this kind of work. In the licensed publication novels, we have more room, permission, and need than we usually do in the comics to explore character back story and culture." Despite that additional freedom, she's careful to point out that Inheritance is about father/son dynamics, not gay culture. "But are the characters in Inheritance aware of gay culture?" she asks rhetorically. "Sure. And they get to joke about it, just like I, as the narrator, get to joke about it. I'm joking with the reader, the characters are joking with each other."
I may not really enjoy it, but I do plan on getting a copy. If I do, I'll be sure to review it here for Aquaman fans.

Aquaman Stays On Top

The Aquaman Pilot continues to be the top video download on iTunes. I'm wondering if the WB has made back the money spent on the pilot from the downloads? Since we don't have any actual numbers, we'll probably never know.

In other news, you can buy the Superhero Stamps, which feature two Aquaman stamps, at The Postal Store. You can also buy a book of postcards that features all twenty stamps as postage-paid postcards with a large version of the art on the front and a smaller stamp version of the art on the back.

When I bought my (first) set of stamps at the local post office, the clerk noted the words "Chapter One" at the bottom of the page and speculated that there might be more superhero stamps coming in future years.

Johnny Drama Says...

Johnny Drama with Aquaman tickets
"Keep up those requests!"

Go to this page and submit a request for an Aquaman T-shirt from the Entourage show! For the subject line, put "Entourage Aquaman T-Shirt?" and for the content, just request a t-shirt based on the Aquaman movie in the show.

I'll be checking the HBO Entourage Shop regularly and will alert folks if I see an official shirt appear. T-Shirt Watch has a link to what appears to be an unofficial t-shirt, but I'd like to see a legit one, personally.

So let's start a wave. Write in and ask for it.
