DC Nation at Fan Expo

There's a tiny bit of Aquaman content in this report from the DC Nation panel at Fan Expo:
DiDio talked about how once, after a panel, fourteen different creators pitched him on Aquaman and "the way to fix him," including Brian Azzarello. Azzarello mentions that it was actually approved, which DiDio follows with "oh yeah." DiDio then talked about how Aquaman and also Wonder Woman don't have "really great rogues galleries," which prompted Ethan Van Sciver to offer "Green Lantern" villain the Shark to Aquaman.

Happy Aquasitions!

I've been telling you to keep an eye on HappyMeal.com for the Batman: Brave and the Bold toys. Well, I finally got 'em for myself. Hubby and I went down to our local McDonald's and asked if I could just get the Manta Ship and Aquaman toy. The manager nicely found one of each for me, and we were done. Couldn't have been any easier.

Toys wrapped

As I really can't eat any McDonald's foodstuff anymore, I just got the toys. Hence the receipt saying "2 HAPPY TOY NO FOOD". I would have liked to get a second set of the two toys to keep in package, but we can't really swing it right now. So after photographing the two for this post, I unwrapped them and played around a little. Then posed them for another photo.

Toys unwrapped

As you can see, the toys are number 3 (Aquaman) and number 6 (Black Manta Sub Launcher). The Mantaship is not to scale with Aquaman, but is still really cool. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it is recalled due to the danger of the launching spear. It flies a nice distance! The Aquaman figure has a switch in back: you hold the switch down, put the water ball on his hands, then let go and he throws it. Not nearly as satisfying as the sub launcher, but if you say, "OUTRAGEOUS!" as you have him throw, it helps a little.

I kind of wish I got a full Happy Meal so I could get the box as well... but that's for another attempt I guess.

Animated Young Justice and Aqualad

CBR's Spinoff Online reports on the new Young Justice series.
Aqualad - Jackson Hyde, who's introduced in DC's Brightest Day #10 - is the leader of the team. Like his comic-book counterpart, the animated Aqualad will be revealed as the son of Black Manta, archenemy of Aquaman. Fans of the previous Aqualad, Garth (aka Tempest), should take heart: He, too, will appear in Young Justice.
Previous reports indicate that Aquaman will also appear in the show, and as a major supporting character along with other members of the Justice League.

Ripples Through Time - 199

I'm reading every Aquaman solo adventure in publication order. After I read each story I will post the cover/splash page and a few thoughts on the story.

Adventure #276 Aquaman Splash Page
Adventure #276 (Sep 1960) - The Aqua-Thief of the Seven Seas!

When Aquaman's attempt to salvage lost diamonds comes up with an empty box, he's accused of stealing the gems.

Regular Supporting Cast: Aqualad

Quotefile: Prime Minister Vuda, "I have another theory, sire! How do we know Aquaman's telling the truth? Maybe he's pulling a trick! Maybe he intends to keep the gems for himself!"

Finny Friends Report: On the splash page, Aquaman's finny friends console him him through fish-telepathy. Aqualad, while riding a porpoise, uses electric eels to short-circuit a pirate submarine's electrical system. Whales push the sub to the mainland. Aquaman uses an octopus to help dig the chest out of the mud. A shark and two swordfish go with Aquaman to an iceberg to make fake diamonds.

The whole adventure starts with the celebration of the prince of Timtu's second birthday, at which the child will receive his weight in diamonds. We get to see the ceremony, then see the chest that contained the diamonds sinking overboard. The King tells his PM to call Aquaman.

Aqualad shows his stuff in this one by taking on a pirate submarine single-handedly as Aquaman rushes off to help the Timtu folks. The prince's nurse points seemingly randomly at the water to show Aquaman "exactly where the chest fell". Without Aqualad to back him up, Aquaman is accused of thievery when he fails to find the gems.

The speech balloons by the fish on the splash page are a little shocking. Aquaman's thought balloon indicates they are speaking to him in fish-telepathy. The scene on the splash page never happens. Aquaman's reputation is never in any real danger, and his quick thinking preserves it from whatver minor damage it might have sustained.

Have you read this story? What do you think?

UPDATE: Rob at the Aquaman Shrine spotted an audio adaptation of this story over at League of Ordinary Gentlemen Comics.

Aquasitions! part III

The last of my August Aquasitions has a little bit of a story behind it. See, I went to this Wizard of Oz convention with my husband this summer. One of the events was a contest for decorating green glasses. I won a prize unexpectedly, and the prize was a $15 gift certificate to Toys'R'Us. I used that prize to purchase my next Aquasition online.

I originally intended to get an Aquaman action figure. But then I spotted Batman: The Brave and The Bold Wall Stickers and realized I just had to get them.

Full Sticker Sheet

The full set contains some very cool Batman images from Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Like Colorforms, these are vinyl cut-outs that stick to smooth surfaces, including most walls, doors, and some foreheads.

Plastic Man

Who better than Plastic Man to protect the doorknob?

Blue Beetle

Blue Beetle protects the closet from marauding ... um, closet monsters?

Batman

Batman protects the router from viruses and other nasties.

Of course, there are five stickers in the set that are Aquaman related. There's these four awesome stickers, shown here protecting my bedside:

Aquaman

Aquaman gets his own sticker, and Black Manta is one of only two villains in the set. There's also a circle sticker of Aquaman and an Aquaman logo. The other Aquaman appearance in the set is a tad more subtle.

Batman with Background

He's also on this Batman sticker, along with Green Arrow and Plastic Man. I decided to have this one guard another door in the house.

The best fun is that these can be pulled off and moved around, allowing me to constantly redecorate the house (much to my husband's annoyance). I really feel like I got my money's worth out of this, especially since I only really had to pay shipping costs.

Aquasitions! part II

This next Aquasition was a complete surprise to me. I got a strange note from a friend and Aquaman artist, and then a few days later this arrived in the mail. An Oz friend by the name of Freddy had been wandering garage sales while staying with the Aquaman artist, found this item, and thought of me!

It's a DC Comics lunchbox, classic Super Friends era!

Lunchbox Front

The front has our standard trio with a tagalong. Superman! Wonder Woman! Batman! Oh, yeah, and Robin. Each one nicely labeled in case you don't know them by sight. And I LOVE the purple trim!

Lunchbox Back

And here's the back of the lunchbox! We get Flash, Batgirl, and Green Arrow. Very cool! But... where's Aquaman?

Lunchbox Side 1

Here's a side of the lunchbox. The Riddler, Catwoman, and the Joker. Still no Aquaman.

Lunchbox Side 2

Here's the other side. Supergirl... and hey, wait a minute! Batman and Robin again? Why not give somebody else a chance, you super-attention hogs!

Lunchbox top

Well, here's the top of the lunchbox, looking under the nifty purple handle. Here we get "Kitten" and the Penguin. I thought her name was Cheetah? Still no Aquaman... But wait, there's one more side to look at:

Lunchbox bottom

Ah! There he is! On the bottom with the good company of Hawkman and Green Lantern. It's Aquaman's standard diving pose, but it means he's bigger and front and center from the other two.

I'm really pleased to add this to my collection. I vaguely recall only one lunchbox I had as a kid, and it wasn't a superhero one. But I like to think that little me would have wanted this box and would have delighted in having it. Now, I wonder if there's any chance at all of finding the thermos that went with it? Hrm. I think I'm only interested if that thermos has Aquaman on it...

Aquasitions! part I

It's been a big month for me getting Aquaman stuff, both by purchasing it and other means. So I thought I'd do a multi-part post that shows off some of the stuff I've gotten recently that's Aquaman related. This is Aquasitions!

Aquasitions Overview

First up is the Entourage Aquaman Poster. I told you about the fan who made this poster based on the Variety ad in the show itself. He limited the run of posters to 25 copies, and only made it so that he could have one for himself. In gratitude for me mentioning the poster, he sent one to me. I got lucky 13 of 25.

Entourage Poster

I have to admit, it's a really nice little poster, the exact thing I wish HBO had made for the series. I don't think they realized that merchandising the fake Aquaman movie would have worked so well. The demand was, and is, there for posters and T-shirts. Back to the poster, it really needs to be properly framed.

Next up is the Commissioned Artwork that Tom Beland produced of Aquaman and Mera.

Tom Beland Art

All the way from Puerto Rico, this artwork is great to have in my collection. Like the poster, it needs to be properly framed. I have a great desire to get my artwork up on my walls again, and just haven't done it.

The third object of interest for this post is my Starro Aquaman Heroclix.

Starro Clix

I'm sorry about the fuzzy image. My phone doesn't take good close-up pictures, I'm afraid. This one came about because I noticed it on eBay going for cheaper than I'd seen it at any convention. I wanted it, and I indulged just a little and got it. I'm still missing a few Aquaman-related HeroClix, including the Crisis Aqualad, Garth, and Tempest, the Arkham Asylum Black Manta, and the two pogs. But I'll get 'em eventually. I hope.

Moving on, let's hit one more from the bit picture before I go. This is the San Diego Comic Con convention bag.

Convention Bag with books

I asked if someone going to San Diego happened to run across one of these, if they might get it for me. The wonderful David Oakes found one while wandering (apparently a little girl didn't want to lug it around any more) and sent it to me after the con, with jokes about how the little girl might still be in it because it weighed so much!

Inside were the program guide for the convention and the souvenir book. The bag itself is HUGE, as you might be able to tell from this picture:

Convention Bag

It's apparently designed to hang on your chest so you can just drop all the stuff you are buying and picking up into it. There's even a side pocket that appears to be designed to hold posters.

So that's it for this edition of Aquasitions. Watch this space. In a day or so, I'll reveal something else.

Ripples Through Time - 198

I'm reading every Aquaman solo adventure in publication order. After I read each story I will post the cover/splash page and a few thoughts on the story.

Adventure #275 Aquaman Splash Page
Adventure #275 (Aug 1960) - The Interplanetary Mission!

Aliens request Aquaman's help in retrieving a lost satellite under their ocean.

Regular Supporting Cast: Aqualad, Topo (not named)

Aqua-Exclamations: "Great Guppies!"

Captured/Knocked Out report: Aquaman and Aqualad are knocked unconscious during lift-off.

Quotefile: Aquaman, attacking the aliens, "Okay! Now the fun really begins!"

Finny Friends Report: Topo helps Aquaman and Aqualad corral floating cages with the wild animals in them. Two whales tow the cages to the nearest port. Topo joins the fight agains the aliens, and whales threaten their spaceship.

While I don't like space stories, this isn't exactly your normal space story for the DCU. The aliens have an ulterior motive that Aquaman foils nicely, helping out Superman in the process. And Aquaman once again uses his brains to figure out the situation, although he seems to really enjoy the fighting once it starts.

Have you read this story? What do you think?

Ripples Through Time - 197

I'm reading every Aquaman solo adventure in publication order. After I read each story I will post the cover/splash page and a few thoughts on the story.

Adventure #274 Aquaman Splash Page
Adventure #274 (Jul 1960) - Aqua-Queen!

The sore loser of a swimming meet decides to outdo Aquaman at his aquatic feats.

Regular Supporting Cast: Aqualad

Aqua-Exclamations: "Suffering Sharks!", "Jumping Jellyfish!", "Great Guppies!"

Captured/Knocked Out report: Aqualad hits his head against Dale's underwater air supply.

Quotefile: Aquaman, "But I can't understand it! You're just a spoiled thrill-seeker who has too much money for her own good! When I last saw you, you were a below-average swimmer! How's you suddenly develop such remarkable aquatic powers?"

Finny Friends Report: Aquaman's fishy friends refuse to go near the derelict, but appear to obey Dale.

This story appears to reuse the script from Adventure #187 (April 1953) - The Queen of the Sea. Ok, not really "appears" so much as matches almost word for word. In fact, in order to really show you just how close these two stories are, I'm going to do some panel by panel comparisons.

Our story starts with a swim meet for charity...

Aquaman is informed that the girl who protests his pick is a wealthy heiress (Ann Collins in 1953, Dale Conroy in 1960)...

Later, Aquaman has to chase down something for the Navy, but someone else arrives...

There is a new sequence added to the 1960 version where Dale Conroy challenges Aquaman to command his fish into a derelict. This was not in the 1953 version. But both versions of the tale move on to the same underwater challenge...

Eventually Aquaman figures out how Ann/Dale is cheating. The last discovery is how she swims so fast...

Aquaman sees one last act that decides how he's going to react to the cheating...

nd the final explanations. Note how the artwork makes Aquaman's final words mean something different in each story.

Of course, there's a lot more to the story than this, but it's very strange to see the script dusted off and reused so completely. In the around the world story, the challenges were changed dramatically. This was a mild rewrite. Still, because of the change in artwork (though not artist) the stories seem very different in many significant ways.

Have you read this story? What do you think?

The fact that we got to sort of re-introduce Mera in "Blackest Night" and have been able to carry that all the way through to "Brightest Day" is important to me. She’s become one of the most intriguing characters in recent years, for me at least, to write. She just has so much potential to be one of the A-listers of the DCU.

Comissioned Artwork

Recently on Facebook, Tom Beland, artist of True Story, Swear to God, the best romance comic book a person could want to read, announced he was taking commissions for some quick artwork. For $15 (later upped to $20 due to the response) you could get a couple of characters in Tom's unique style. Well, I'd just gotten a little Paypal money and asked permission from the hubby-Eric, and so I asked for Aquaman and Mera. And today I got to see my sketch!

Looking through the sketches he's done, mine was the third with Aquaman (one was Spider-Man riding Aquaman like a dolphin, the other was Batman in a diving suit next to Aquaman on a WICKED seahorse). In any case, mine will need to be framed as soon as I can afford it and put up next to my Ramona Fradon and Nick Cardy artwork.

Ripples Through Time - 196

I'm reading every Aquaman solo adventure in publication order. After I read each story I will post the cover/splash page and a few thoughts on the story.

Adventure #273 Aquaman Splash Page
Adventure #273 (Jun 1960) - Around the World in 80 Hours!

Aquaman and Aqualad swim around the world in 80 hours for charity.

Regular Supporting Cast: Aqualad

Quotefile: The newspapers report on Aquaman's journey:
Aquaman's estimated time between bodies of water!

From San Francisco to the Panama Cancel..... 10 hours
From Panama Canal to the Mediterranean Sea..... 17 hours
Through Mediterranean Sea to the Suez Canal..... 6 hours
From Suez Canal to Indian Ocean..... 4 hours
Across Indian Ocean to Pacific Ocean..... 20 hours
Across Pacific Ocean to San Francisco..... 23 hours
This is set over a map showing the route.

Finny Friends Report: Giant squid squirt ink at planes attacking Aquaman and Aqualad. Flying fish form an SOS to summon a military task force to deal with an attacking submarine. Sharks and sawfish prepare sheets of lead to wrap the pair and protect them from atomic fallout. Octopi wrap the pair in lead.

A story with this plotline was published in More Fun #86 (December 1942). While the plot is the same, Aquaman racing across the world, the events are different. In the Golden Age tale, Aquaman goes to Hollywood and the project is for a charity film, and he has seven days. In the older tale, he faces water covered in oil and set on fire, bombs and depth charges, drugged water (and is actually captured by the Japanese), a muddy channel where he is attacked by Japanese bombers, and finally fake cameramen with guns. He makes it in less than six days. In this tale, Aquaman and Aqualad are attacked by planes in a shallow area (similar to the muddy channel), torpedoed after they leave the Panama Canal, have to get through a radioactive Indian Ocean, enter a minefield, and have to cross an arid island.

Aquaman carries waterproof matches and capsules of oxygen and hydrogen in his belt kit so he can make water if he needs it. Which no doubt he will, since he announces his one hour weakness on international news.

Have you read this story? What do you think?
